Local-First Alternative to Pieces and Cacher
If you want snippets and notes as Markdown files you can open outside their original app, massCode is an option. But Pieces and Cacher should not be treated as the same storage model: Pieces stores work memories on-device, while Cacher offers a hosted snippet service and an organizational self-hosting option.
The useful comparison separates local availability, file portability, account requirements, and collaboration. Download massCode to try a Markdown library without an account.
Local-first and plain files are different criteria
Ink & Switch's local-first principles include offline work, user control, multiple devices, and collaboration. They do not require every application to use Markdown or rule out local databases.
Ask four separate questions:
- Local availability: can you access and edit the content without a server connection?
- Portability: can another tool read or export the content in a useful format?
- Sync and processing: which data leaves the device when optional services are used?
- Ownership and access: which accounts, subscriptions, or organization policies are involved?
A plain-file vault is massCode's approach to portability. It does not make reminders, mobile clients, AI, or team collaboration technically impossible; those are separate product decisions.
Storage and workflow comparison
| Criterion | massCode | Pieces | Cacher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Curated snippets and developer notes | AI recall of work context | Snippet libraries and team sharing |
| Storage model | Local Markdown Vault | Work memories stored on-device | Hosted account; organizational self-hosting available |
| Portability | Markdown files in any editor | Check the installed version's export options | Use the service's export workflow |
| Sync | Your own file service or Git workflow | Review current product and organization settings | Managed service |
| Account requirement | None | Subscription-based product | Required for the service |
| Managed team roles | No | Enterprise policy controls | Teams role management |

What a massCode vault gives you
A Markdown Vault is a directory containing your snippets, notes, and HTTP requests. Content and metadata use Markdown and frontmatter; folder state is kept separately in .state.json files.
You can inspect a file in another editor, keep versions in Git, and move the vault to another computer. massCode watches for external changes. That portability is useful if you want a curated library to remain readable independently of the app.
Code, Notes, HTTP, Math, and Drawings share the workspace. A request example and the note explaining it can stay near the snippet that uses it.
Sync still needs a workflow
Choose a file service such as iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, or Syncthing, or use Git. These services differ in version history and conflict handling. Sharing a directory does not add massCode-specific team roles or simultaneous-edit conflict resolution.
Keep cloud-managed vault files downloaded before relying on offline access. See sync and offloaded files. HTTP secret values stay outside the vault and must be entered separately on each device.
Moving private snippets
massCode imports VS Code snippets JSON, Raycast snippets JSON, SnippetsLab JSON, already-public GitHub Gist URLs, and Obsidian Markdown folders. See the Code library and storage guide for supported flows.
There is no direct Pieces or Cacher importer. For private snippets in an unsupported format, keep a backup and copy a small sample locally before rebuilding the rest of the library. Do not publish private code to create a Gist import path. Preview and inspect supported imports for missing metadata before retiring the original library.
Which model fits your work?
- Choose massCode for a curated Markdown library with developer workspaces and no required account.
- Choose Pieces for AI recall of activity across tools; local storage is already part of its model.
- Choose Cacher for managed snippet sharing, team roles, and GitHub Gist sync; check its deployment options if hosted storage is unsuitable.
massCode has no built-in AI memory, managed team workspace, or Gist round-trip sync. These are its current feature boundaries, not unavoidable trade-offs of local-first software.
